There’s a specific kind of feeling I get every March. Along with the sea of green and the sound of the bagpipes, it’s that moment when we’re headed to the parade, whether in our hometown or a ways away in a bigger city to watch.
St. Patrick’s Day is a bridge between the community we protect and the traditions that built us into what we are today. It’s a time to reflect on the traditions that made us, and the importance of continuing them. A little fun mixed in also helps.
This year we were able to take part in our local parade- a small lineup of local businesses, many, MANY, decorated golf carts, and the local fire engine. Myself, my wife, and our two kids snagged a ride and enjoyed the experience.
When I looked around at individuals and families adorned in shamrocks and varying shades of green, I’m reminded that generations of firefighters before us turned a tough situation into a legacy of service. Many of those guys took this job when they didn't have many other options, and they built the reputation we carry now.
Being part of our local parade is our way of showing we haven't forgotten that.
Usually when people see us, it is because they are having the worst day of their lives. The parade gives us a chance to connect during a moment of pure joy and celebration instead. Seeing the kids' faces light up and smiling citizens on the route puts everything back into perspective.
