Hero's Name: Retired FF Marty F.
A 26-Year Career FF With Clark County FD
"I had six weeks on the Clark County F.D. (Las Vegas, Nevada) when on November 21, 1980, around 7:00 am I was getting to the fire station during shift change. A few minutes later we got a 2nd alarm response call to the MGM Grand Hotel on the Las Vegas strip for a fire in a building.
Just a little excited on the tailboard on the way to the fire I was going through my Rookie School SOPs on what to do for the hose lays. When we arrived on scene I realized things on the fire ground never go as we were trained.
As the rookie I was going through what my position was supposed to do as for pulling hose, other firefighters ran over and just started throwing hose off the engine. That’s when I learned you adapt and improvise on every scene. There is no one way to do things. You are part of a special group that figure things out on the ‘fly’!"
